Trailheads are approximately 13 KM from down town St. John's.
Path length: 10.6 KM (one way)

Path Description: Coastal path with steep climbs, long top of ridge hike, descent into Freshwater (former settlement), then a barachois crossing, hilly section with cliffs, bird nesting views, mixed woods and berry picking grounds.
Attractions: Fort Amherst (lighthouse), swimming holes on the Southside Hills, Freshwater (former settlement), the barachois with rusty pieces of the SS Thetis shipwreck, berry picking and bird watching.
Trailhead North
(directions):
FORT AMHERST:
Go to the south side of St. Johns harbour - Southside Road - driving east, past the dry dock, towards the end of the road, and park just past the small boat basin.
Parking & walking directions to Trailhead North: Only local cars allowed to drive further. Sign in the parking lot will read Trail 460m. Please do not drive beyond this area. Walk to the trail head which is just past the gate to the Fort Amherst lighthouse.

Trailhead South

BLACKHEAD:
Turn off Cape Spear Road at Blackhead and drive through the community taking the right turn to the parking at the turnaround.
Parking & walking directions to Trailhead South: There is another parking area facing the beach - please be careful not to block local residents. The trail head is to the northwest.
GPS South: 47.5324, -52.6222
Current Path status: Good condition, with a couple of blow-down easy to get around south of Freshwater Bay. Path visible and passable April 2016

The Freshwater Bay Barachois
The barachois has moved in the many storms experienced. The flat stone path along the inside of the barachois has been rebuilt and marked with black & whites. At the south end of the barachois, expect a possible jump across an open channel.

Freshwater Bay parking lot at the access route on Cape Spear Road. Do not leave valuables in your car. There are frequent reports on break-ins to vehicles at this location. This access trail is 2.2km in length.
Community Facilities: Fort Amherst lighthouse and WW2 battery just beyond north trailhead (no facilities)

All facilities available in St. John's (across the harbour)

Blackhead has a local museum (the old schoolhouse, seasonal) but no facilities
